Dental implants

Dental implants are small titanium posts that replace the tooth root and provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are precisely placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes and are surgically placed into the jawbone. The bone bonds with the titanium post, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.

What Happens During Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery typically takes a few hours, depending on the number of implants being placed and whether other procedures will be performed at the same time. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the gum line — this allows for the implant to be set into the jawbone, where it will later serve as a permanent artificial tooth root.

Once the implant is placed, our dentist in Chandler will stitch the gums closed over the implant to allow for proper healing. Then, a temporary restoration may be placed on the implant site so you can leave the office with a full set of teeth.

Once the bone and gum around your dental implant has healed completely, you'll come back to the office to have your permanent restoration placed. You will need an abutment attached to the implant on which a dental crown, bridge, partial denture, or complete denture will be attached to replace the missing tooth or teeth.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are several benefits to receiving dental implants. First, the obvious benefit is that implants look and feel completely natural. Because a natural-looking crown is placed on top, no one will be able to tell that you have a replacement tooth. In fact, an implant will look identical to a natural tooth, and you will be able to talk and eat normally.

Another major benefit to choosing dental implants is their ability to prevent bone loss. A missing tooth leaves the jawbone open to calcium resorption, wherein the body takes calcium from where it seems to be no longer needed, e.g., a jawbone that no longer experiences stimulation from a tooth root,  and takes it to where it is more needed. This slowly reduces the jawbone’s density. However, with a dental implant in place, the jawbone is stimulated and the gumline will stay strong and healthy.

Aside from this, dental implants also restore full chewing function and the ability to speak clearly. Implants allow you to live your life without worrying about missing teeth or dentures slipping out of place throughout the day.
